OGA

Seville hosts the global launch of the second edition of the Handbook of Heuristics, an academic and industrial reference work on complex process optimisation techniques.

January 12th, 2026

OGA, a leading technology company in Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research solutions, will host the global launch of the book ‘Handbook of Heuristics’ (Second Edition), considered the reference manual in the field of advanced optimisation and published by the prestigious publisher Springer Nature.

The event will take place on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hotel Giralda Center in Seville and will be attended by the editor-in-chief, Dr. Rafael Martí; the co-editor, Dr. Mauricio Resende; as well as representatives from the Springer publishing house and several of its co-authors, international references in applied research of these techniques with such a wide industrial impact.

The Handbook of Heuristics, first published in 2018 by Springer Nature, is considered by the international scientific and professional community to be the leading reference work on heuristic and metaheuristic techniques applied to the optimisation of complex processes. Its second edition, launched in October 2025, has already recorded more than 20,000 views in less than three months.

OGA will present the second edition of the Handbook of Heuristics on Thursday, January 22nd, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hotel Giralda Center in Seville, as part of its V CATEDRA Group Congress, the company’s Technology Advisory Council. The presentation, which is open to the public, will be held in English in a hybrid format (in person and live streaming) and requires prior registration through the event’s official website.

OGA’s global recognition in applied excellence.

This event not only brings the most influential work in optimisation to Seville, but also highlights the contribution of OGA, a technology company specialising in Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research solutions, as the only company featured in this second edition.

The chapter, ‘The OGA Company. The Role of Heuristics in Logistic Consulting Services’ , highlights the company’s innovation model, combining Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research to solve large-scale planning and optimisation problems, playing a pioneering role in the practical application of heuristic optimisation techniques in real business environments.

The inclusion of OGA in this global reference manual represents international recognition of its leadership in the use of advanced optimisation to solve complex operational problems in sectors such as industry, logistics, retail and energy.

According to Juan Carlos Rubio, CEO of OGA: “The Handbook of Heuristics is to our discipline what a reference encyclopedia is to science. OGA’s inclusion in its second edition represents a historic milestone and global validation of the value of our work: demonstrating that science, when applied correctly, can transform entire industries. ”.

Handbook of Heuristics: The ‘bible’ of optimisation

Published by Springer Nature, an international leader in scientific and technical publishing, the Handbook of Heuristics is an essential academic reference work that summarises the state of the art in techniques for solving complex problems using heuristics and metaheuristics.

The first edition, in 2018, was edited by renowned researchers Dr Rafael Martí, Dr Mauricio Resende and Dr Panos Pardalos. In its second edition, published in October 2025, Dr Rafael Martí, also a member of OGA‘s Technology Advisory Board, takes on the role of editor-in-chief, consolidating the continuity of a work that compiles the most outstanding contributions from leading experts in heuristic optimisation worldwide and updating its content with the latest advances in high-performance optimisation and applied artificial intelligence.

In this context, OGA is the only company invited to participate in this manual with its own chapter, a fact that underscores its position as an international benchmark in the practical application of Operational Research (OR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for solving real business problems.

'The OGA Company. The Role of Heuristics in Logistic Consulting Services'. Business impact: beyond the algorithm.

The chapter ‘The OGA Company. The Role of Heuristics in Logistic Consulting Services’ analyses the impact of the OGAs methodology in the field of logistics and operational planning, where problems known as Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP), among the most studied in Operational Research, are addressed in the daily practice of transport, distribution, and retail companies.

The chapter illustrates real cases where OGA has reduced planning hours to seconds, optimised routes with rich constraints (time windows, heterogeneous fleets, load balancing) and enabled strategic simulation for ‘what if’ scenarios. All this with a multi-objective approach that balances cost, service and carbon footprint.

OGAs experience in developing heuristic and hybrid optimisation models combined with AI allows it to solve, in seconds, planning tasks that traditionally required hours or even days, generating measurable cost reductions, energy savings and productivity increases.

The combination of advanced heuristics, evolutionary metaheuristics and machine learning techniques allows us to build extremely valuable solutions that transform operational decisions into strategic advantages”, explains Alfredo García Hernández-Díaz, Optimisation SME at OGA and coordinator of the Technology Advisory Board, CATEDRA Group.

From research to impact: CATEDRA Group, OGA’s Technology Advisory Board.

OGA‘s presence in this project consolidates a track record marked by its commitment to collaboration between science and industry. In 2022, the company created the CATEDRA Group, its Technology Advisory Council, made up of 14 professors and researchers from national and international universities, including Rafael Martí, Mauricio Resende, Amparo Alonso, Julián Molina, Abraham Duarte and Manuel Laguna, all of whom are world leaders in Operational Research and Artificial Intelligence.

CATEDRA Group provides a framework for collaboration and scientific and technical advice that enables OGA to remain at the forefront of research in Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research. Its contribution is key to inspiring, guiding and validating the use of the most advanced techniques, tools and approaches in optimisation and applied analytics.

Thanks to this relationship of exchange and continuous learning, OGA drives the development of high-tech solutions that are transforming large-scale production, logistics and planning processes, such as oga.Logistics, oga.Factory, oga.Scheduler, oga.APS and oga.Alchemy, designed to address highly complex multi-objective and multi-parameter problems.

V OGA CATEDRA Group Congress

In this context, OGA is organising the fifth edition of the annual conference of its Technology Advisory Council, CATEDRA Group, in Seville on January 21, 22 and 23, 2026.

The programme for the V OGA CATEDRA Group Congress will include two internal working days on January 21st and 22nd, with sessions and debates between the OGA team and the members of its Technology Advisory Board.

The global launch of the Handbook of Heuristics (Second Edition) will take place on Thursday, January 22nd, at 7:30 p.m. CET, in an event open to the public and the media, both in person and via live stream, for which prior registration will be required.

The third day of the conference, January 23rd, will focus on OGATHON 4.0, a technological challenge open to previously registered teams and the media. Participants will have to solve challenges related to Artificial Intelligence, Operational Research and Cybersecurity. This is undoubtedly an exceptional opportunity to connect talent and innovation in a relaxed atmosphere, with the presence of leading international experts in AI and Optimisation attending the conference.
